Purvine-Walker Reunion Aug. 13, 2016
It was a few minutes past 11am when Alex rang the church bell and family members assembled inside. Vicki welcomed all, but especially those who were attending for the first time since the reunions were started in the early 80s. Jan led an opening prayer. Vicki introduced people by family group. In attendance were descendants of: John Purvine’s children Andrew Jackson Purvne and his first wife Mary Eliza Daughterty, Andrew Jackson and his second wife Pauline F Staiger, Nelson Purvine, and Smiley M. Purvine; Walter M. Walker’s daughter Mary Virginia Walker and her husband Joshua Lorance Purvine; Charles Purvine’s son Thomas Byron Purvine; and of Moses Harvey Purvine. All were urged to sign the guest book. The program was about the Walker family. Vicki mentioned that she had found no ancestors who were slave owners, which she found unusual for the pre-civil war times. Then she came across the will of Adam Walker that was probated January 1, 1835. Vicki handed out a typed transcription of the original hand-written will, along with other information about Adam’s children, many of whom had emigrated to Oregon. Vicki noted that Claiborne and Wellington Bolivar emigrated in 1845 and Walter followed in 1848 with John Purvine. The will of Adam Walker indicated that he had owned several slaves. Linda presented the Treasurer’s Report. She stated there was currently $750.30 in the bank. After the last reunion, over $1000 was donated to the church. This came from money collected at the reunion and from contributions made directly to the church by family members. Contributions were requested and collected from those gathered for the reunion expenses and for the church. There was a brief discussion about contributing money directly to the church and Vicki said she would provide that information in her reunion report. Special thanks was given to David for storing and transporting the tables, chairs and other reunion items. The reunion saved money because we no longer have to rent these items. Memorials: The following who had passed away were remembered: Helen Purvine Kolb, sister of Byra Purvine McDougall and aunt of Lois David Perkins, husband of Lois Donald McDougall, son of Byra Purvine McDougall Margaret Murphy Turner, mother of Jean Respectfully submitted, Mila |
